Professional biography
Dr. Mohammad Ali Faghihi
Physician-scientist, medical geneticist, RNA researcher, educator, and laboratory leader.
Medicine and biomedical science
Dr. Mohammad Ali Faghihi earned his medical degree at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences and completed doctoral training at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. That combination of clinical medicine and biomedical research shaped a career focused on how genetic and RNA mechanisms can illuminate neurological disease and improve molecular diagnosis.
Research in RNA and neurological disease
During his work at The Scripps Research Institute in Florida, Dr. Faghihi investigated natural antisense transcripts and other forms of non-coding RNA. His research addressed fundamental questions about gene regulation while connecting those mechanisms to Alzheimer’s disease, Fragile X syndrome, neurodevelopmental disorders, and other neurological conditions.
A widely referenced 2008 study in Nature Medicine reported a non-coding antisense RNA associated with regulation of beta-secretase in Alzheimer’s disease. A 2009 review in Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology examined the broader regulatory roles of natural antisense transcripts. These publications helped bring attention to the functional importance of RNA molecules that do not encode proteins.
University teaching and collaboration
Dr. Faghihi’s academic work included appointments connected with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, including Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. His publication record reflects collaborations in RNA biology, autism, hereditary spastic paraplegia, neurodevelopmental genetics, and translational science.
Molecular diagnostics and laboratory leadership
Alongside academic research, Dr. Faghihi worked in molecular diagnostics and high-complexity genetic testing. His professional profile describes laboratory leadership, review of genetic testing results, and efforts to connect modern sequencing with clinically meaningful answers for patients and families.
A record of scientific contribution
Across research, diagnostics, inventorship, teaching, and mentorship, Dr. Faghihi’s work reflects a consistent theme: using molecular insight to better understand human disease. The current record can be explored through his peer-reviewed publications, public patent documents, and professional profiles.
